Everything we know about the Resident Evil 2 remake

STARS align.

We knew that a Resident Evil 2 update was coming at some point, but we didn’t realise it would be a comprehensive reworking of the game in a modern engine. At E3 2018 Capcom dropped some videos and started demoing playable builds of the game behind closed doors. We were impressed.

While there’s still plenty to be revealed before the Resident Evil 2 remake’s release early next year, here’s everything we know so far.

What is the Resident Evil remake release date?

The Resident Evil 2 remake is out January 25, 2019.

These two will give you a good idea of the tone and atmosphere of the remake, and how it intends to shake up the original with a new engine, 3D environments and a new camera angle. Let’s start with the scene-setting introductory trailer, in which we see Leon Kennedy’s boyband centre-parting rendered at a whole new level of fidelity.

This 15-minute gameplay trailer is much more instructive. It shows a chunk near the start of the game, including exploration, combat and cutscenes. The flashlight is evidently going to be an important device in this game.

The UI has been modernised but we’ll still be playing inventory Tetris with guns and spraycans. The colour-coded pule health system returns, though no sign of magic green herbs yet.

What’s new in the Resident Evil 2 remake?

This remake goes above and beyond the decent HD remaster of Resident Evil 1, which polished up the old pre-rendered backgrounds and prettied up the lighting and character models. The Resident Evil 2 remake has been built from the ground-up with full 3D assets. The fixed camera angles are gone. Now we follow Leon from an over-the-shoulder view reminiscent of Resident Evil 4. It seems a lot darker, and the zombies fall apart in a much gorier manner.

Capcom suggests it won’t be a room-for-room copy of the original Resident Evil 2. Expect some surprises. “Not everything is exactly where you remember it,” says Resident Evil brand manager Mike Lunn. “That’s intentional. “This isn’t just a remake. It’s a whole new game we’re building off the foundation of the original game. So there’s going to be a lot of familiar stuff, but a lot of new stuff as well.”

It won’t be a dedicated action game like Resident Evil 4, however. It’s more of a survival horror metroidvania experience with tough zombies and scarce resources.

Which enemies are coming back in the Resident Evil 2 remake?

In addition to the usual assortment of zombies that you’d expect from Resident Evil 2, this guy appears to be the remake’s take on the Tyrant. Where did he get that hat from?

The Licker is a series staple and they look pretty horrible in the Resident Evil 2 remake. We see one spike a human with its tongue in the debut trailer.

What else do we know?

It has been in development for about three years and it’s built in the Resident Evil 7 engine. Claire and Leon have separate campaigns instead of A and B scenarios.

You can find supplies and use boards to block windows. It looks like we will be able to explore parts of Raccoon City that we were only able to see in the background in the original Resident Evil 2.

Are there any Resident Evil 2 remake screenshots?

Four official shots so far, showing Leon and the zombies in more lose-up detail than the videos.
