Beginner Diy: Pom Pom Sweater Refashion

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A plain sweater (mine is this one from old navy and I’m wearing a size medium)
  • Yarn in the color of your choice (I used about half a skein)
  • embroidery thread in a matching color (can match the yarn or the sweater)
  • embroidery thread needle (one that has a large eye)
  • kitchen fork
  • scissors

First we need to create the pom poms. These are a little time consuming, but they’re super easy and mindless – just turn on a movie and bust them out.

  1. Take an 8-10 inch piece of yarn and thread it through the middle two prongs of the fork, pushing it all the way to the bottom.
  2. With the end of your skein of yarn, start wrapping your yarn around the fork. Count how many times you wrap around so you can keep your pom poms the same size. I did 35 wraps. You can also use a larger fork to make larger pom poms!
  3. Once you’re done with your wraps, tie the 8-10 inch piece tightly around the wrapped yarn and knot the yarn.
  4.  Now you’ll have a tight little ball of yarn.
  5. Slide your scissors into each side of the ball of yarn and cut all the loops of yarn on each side. Make sure you don’t cut the center string that’s holding it all together!
  6. Fluff your pom pom and trim the sides so it’s a perfect little ball.

Once you’ve made enough pom pom balls, lay your sweater on a flat surface and determine the placement of your pom poms.

Use your embroidery needle and embroidery thread to hand sew each pom pom on. Do this carefully and try to loop your thread around that center piece of string as you attach it so it’s very secure.
